Elephants Sometimes Forget
Raven Fowlkes-Witten
Your skin reminds me of winter:
bare branches,
limbs breaking under light weight.
Jackets never fit you well,
everything looked big on you.
You never learned to swim
or ride a bike.
You were too busy teaching
grandpa how to cook.
He mixed burnt beans
with fresh ones -
no one told him
adding more
doesn't fix what's already there.
